Monday, January 11: News Article

Common New Year’s resolutions include eating healthier and working out. New research has shown lifting weights not only makes your muscles stronger but also makes your brain stronger too! A recent study found weightlifting first causes changes in the brain before changes in the muscles. https://www.inverse.com/mind-body/weightlifting-brain-muscles-study

Congrats to Dr. Steven Pratscher who received the Mind & Life Institute Valera Grant for his research on alternative approaches to pain relief. His randomized controlled trial will examine a 5-day breathing practice intervention that involves conscious connected breathing in individuals with chronic low back pain.

Meet Stanley Wu, one of PRICE’s wonderful volunteers. Stanley has been assisting with the UPLOAD II study which examines group differences in the experience of pain in older adults with knee osteoarthritis. Working as a medical assistant at North Florida Integrative Medicine, he saw how patients reported a variety of pain tolerances which varied differently across ethnic groups. This curiosity led him to become a volunteer research assistant at PRICE. In the future, Stanley will be applying to medical school in order to become a scholarly physician contributing to the advancement of science through clinical research. When not working as a medical assistant or volunteering in PRICE, Stanley enjoys riding roller coasters, working out, and swimming at the beach.
