Study Name: Acute Effects of Alcohol Use on Chronic Orofacial Pain

Purpose of the study

We are conducting a research study on the effects of alcohol consumption on sensory function in people with temporomandibular muscle and joint disorder (TMD) and healthy volunteers. Compensation provided.

Who is eligible?

This study is looking for two groups:

  • Group #1 – Adults with temporomandibular muscle and joint disorder (TMD). To participate in this group you must be between the ages of 23 and 45, be a current drinker in good physical health, be a non-smoker, have no history of treatment for alcohol or other substance abuse, and have temporomandibular muscle and joint disorder (TMD).
  • Group #2 – Healthy volunteers. To participate in this group you must be between the ages of 23 and 45, be a current drinker in good physical health, be a non-smoker, and have no history of treatment for alcohol or other substance abuse.

Additional criteria may apply.

What will happen if I participate?

Participation involves three laboratory visits, consumption of beverages that may contain alcohol, and sensory/pain testing.
