The WHO recently updated their guidelines for pediatric (ages 0-19) chronic pain management. Importantly, the recommendations emphasize a multidisciplinary/biopsychosocial approach to treatment that includes a combination of physical, psychological, and pharmacological interventions. These guidelines, which include 10 best practice statements, also highlight important points related to appropriate opioid use in this population. Incorporating an accurate view of pain as a multidimensional experience, these new guidelines represent a huge step forward for improving comprehensive chronic pain management in children and adolescents.
