For many women with chronic pain, the pandemic has exacerbated an already persistent problem of access to medical help and credibility with their physicians, especially for members of marginalized groups. While telemedicine has boomed in the last year, it may not be enough for those suffering with pain that is not easily seen or explained.

Friday October 1st: Spotlight

This week we welcome postdoc Dr. Larissa Strath who recently completed her PhD in Behavioral Neuroscience at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Working under the mentorship of Dr. Yenisel Cruz-Almeida, she will further explore how diet impacts brain-aging and epigenetic modifications, as well as how nutrition impacts the pain experience. She became interested in research after being approached by her PhD mentor Dr. Robert Sorge at a conference and was hooked. In the future she hopes to have a faculty position of her own doing community outreach to provide nutrition education as an intervention for chronic pain and premature aging. In her free time, Larissa loves to be active, running, hiking, exploring nature, and relaxing with her two cats and dog, painting, and cooking. Welcome Larissa!
