In a small, qualitative study, researchers out of the University of Technology Sydney in Australia sought to learn more about the language patients use to describe chronic pain. They found that participants often turned to metaphors and emphasized the shame and isolation they suffered as a result of pain. Researchers believe that pain metaphors can potentially represent targets for therapeutic intervention and are worth understanding and characterizing in greater detail.
