Study Examines At-Home Substance Use

MeredithB34

MTurk (Amazon Mechanical Turk) is an online crowdsourcing platform where businesses, researchers, and other organizations can hire people to complete small tasks. A recent study examined how people who use substances such as alcohol, cannabis or opioids, behave when participating in these crowdsourcing platforms.

The study which has been published in the article, “Naturalistic Substance Use Before/During MTurk Research Participation Is Associated With Increased Substance Demand and Craving” found that around 35% of participants used substances. Although the overall quality of the data wasn’t affected, it was found that demand for the substance increased if it was readily available. The overall findings of the study suggest that researchers may need to begin to account for substance use when designing future studies.

The study, which was co-authored by PRICE affiliate Meredith Berry, has been published in Experimental and Clinical Psychopharmacology

A new study co-authored by PRICE affiliate Stephen Anton amongst UF staff examines what motivates and prevents older black adults from using both in-person healthcare and video telehealth services. Older black adults often face problems racism, ageism, and other forms of discrimination. These factors can make accessing healthcare difficult.

After conducting virtual focus groups amongst lower-income older black adults between the ages of 55 and 84, it was concluded that future healthcare improvements for older Black adults should focus on reducing discrimination, improving trust, and offering more culturally sensitive care.

The study, “Motivators of and barriers to in-person health care and video telehealth utilization among older Black adults: a qualitative study” has been published at Ethnicity and Health and can be accessed below!
