“Sleep Efficiency Mediates the Association Between Neighborhood Disadvantage and Knee Osteoarthritis Pain: Findings from the Understanding Pain and Limitations in Osteoarthritic Disease Study 2” was recently published in Arthritis Care & Research! This collaborative study conducted by Roger Fillingim, Angela Mickle, Kimberly Sibille, Roland Staud, Burel Goodin and Daniel Kusko, alongside researchers from The University of Florida, Alabama in Birmingham as well as Washington University in St. Louis, examined how living in a disadvantaged neighborhood might influence knee osteoarthritis pain severity with a focus on sleep as a possible link.

During the course of the study, it was found that living in a disadvantaged neighborhood could in fact worsen knee osteoarthritis pain by affecting overall sleep quality and suggested that treatments targeting sleep improvement could help patients to manage knee osteoarthritis pain symptoms.

What effect do socioeconomic factors have on the development of severe chronic pain? Can machine learning models predict who may be most at risk?

A recent study conducted by Emily Bartley and Burel Goodin, amongst researchers from across the northern hemisphere found that certain machine learning models helped highlight how different groups of individuals may be at risk for severe chronic pain, highlighting an opportunity to improve health equity efforts and chronic pain management strategies!

The article, “Haves and have-nots: socioeconomic position improves accuracy of machine learning algorithms for predicting high-impact chronic pain” has been published in Pain!
