Study Examines Cannabidiol on Trigeminal Neuralgia

Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a very painful facial condition. Men and women often experience this pain differently. Unfortunately, current treatments don’t work well for everyone and can have bad side effects. A recent study tested whether cannabidiol (CBD)—a non-psychoactive compound from cannabis—could be a better treatment option.
In “Sex-related differences in cannabidiol’s antinociceptive efficacy in a trigeminal neuralgia rodent model” researchers Airam Vivanco-Estela, Sanderson Araujo da Rocha, Daniela Escobar-Espinal, Gabriela Goncalves Balico, Robert Caudle, Francisco Guimaraes, Elaine Del-Bel and Glauce Crivelaro Nascimento tested both CBD as well as a common drug known as carbamazepine to male and female rats with TN, finding that CBD was often safer and more effective at reducing facial pain as well as oxidative stress, hinting that it could be an effective alternative to current treatment methods!
