From the Archive: Where to Start

The PRICE of Pain podcast, hosted by Dr. Joshua Crow, ran for 22 episodes across 2021 and 2022. The center itself is a good deal older — PRICE was well established long before anyone put a microphone in front of it. But the archive is the best introduction to this place that exists in recorded form: long, unhurried conversations with pain researchers explaining their own work in their own words.

Start with Episode 1, in which Dr. Roger Fillingim sets out what PRICE was built to do and why a center dedicated to pain was needed at all. Episode 2 follows, with Dr. Yenisel Cruz-Almeida on the center’s research directions.

For the founding story proper, Episode 14 is the one — Dr. Joseph L. Riley III on his own route into pain research and how the center came to exist. Centers like this do not appear because somebody writes a strategic plan. They appear because a small number of people spend years arguing that a problem deserves dedicated attention, assemble collaborators across departments that do not normally talk, and keep it going long enough that it looks obvious in hindsight.

Those three run about two hours together, and they are the closest thing to a guided tour of the field, and of this center, that we have published.

One practical note if you go looking: our podcast page lists episodes up to number 20, but the show actually ran to 22 — Dr. Larissa Strath’s two-part conversation (part 1, part 2) closed it out in October 2022. Everything is on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and YouTube.
