Pain Awareness Month ends tomorrow. Here are the concrete routes into this work, in order of how much they ask of you.
1. Join the research registry
The lowest-commitment option and the most useful. Joining the registry means we can contact you about studies you may be eligible for. It does not enrol you in anything, it does not commit you to participating, and you can decline any individual study.
It takes a few minutes. Details are at the bottom of this page.
2. Take part in a study
Two UF pain studies are currently listed as recruiting on ClinicalTrials.gov:
- ULLTRA (NCT05916235) — photobiomodulation for temporomandibular disorder pain
- PROACTIVE, the PROACTIVE Study for Black Elders (NCT06512727) — PI Dr. Staja “Star” Booker
Each registered trial has a public record listing its eligibility criteria, design, and contacts. Reading it first is sensible.
3. Volunteer or train with us
If you are a UF student, we take student research assistant volunteers, and applications come through this site. It is genuine research experience: recruitment, data collection, and the unglamorous work that studies actually consist of.
If you hold a doctorate, our two NIH-funded postdoctoral programs — IMPART (T32) and UF PAIN TEAM (T90/R90) — accept applications through the Training and Education section.
If you are UF faculty, clinical staff, or a trainee, the Interdisciplinary Pain Research Journal Club meets roughly monthly.
4. Give
PRICE accepts philanthropic support through the Make a Gift page. Gifts support pilot studies and trainee work — the kind of early-stage research that has no federal funding yet because it has no preliminary data yet, which is the chicken-and-egg problem philanthropy is unusually good at solving.
And one date: October 2
Pain Research Day is on October 2 — three days from now. It is the annual gathering of the UF pain research community, and the most direct way to see in one afternoon what this month has been describing one day at a time.
It runs 8:30 to 6:00 on the third floor of the CTRB, 2004 Mowry Road, with a keynote from Dr. Alexandre F. DaSilva of the University of Michigan. Register here.
The registry is the one to start with. Everything else follows more easily once we can reach you.
What we study:
- Pain and Aging
- Chronic Pain Risk Factors
- Pain and the Brain
- Musculoskeletal Pain
- Pain and Exercise
- Non-Medical Treatment of Pain
