Study Name: Empowering the Management of Pain-Obesity-Weight through Enhanced Reward (EMPOWER)

Purpose of the study

This project examines the effect of an 8-month integrated pain and weight management intervention for adults with chronic low back pain and with a body mass index greater than 25 kg/m2.This project examines the effect of an 8-month integrated pain and weight management intervention for adults with chronic low back pain and with a body mass index greater than 25 kg/m2.

Who is eligible?

Participants who are:

  • 45-80 years of age
  • Have a BMI greater than or equal to 25kg/m2
  • Have low back pain on most days

What will happen if I participate?

We will ask you about your recent health experiences and obtain a list of your medications. If you decide to participate, you will be assigned to a 16-session intervention where you will learn ways to manage pain and lose weight. This program will build skills that center on increasing positive emotions, setting goals, stress management, healthy eating, and physical activities. We will also ask you to rate your pain, mood, and physical activities at home using an Apple Smartwatch.
